So far, they have been real reliable. Only a few problems with plugs breaking in the heads during removal. Total hours for this repair was 5.5 hours.

Thanks for watching and I appreciate the compliment! First off, a lot of the VCT Phaser problems I have come across have had poor oil quality, lack of changing or poor quality filters. This is probably why a tech from Ford has recommended lifters. With the engine at operating temp, rattle heard from the front of the engine could be Phasers. Raise the RPM to 1200; if the rattle goes away, its caused by the VCT Phasers. If still present, debris could be sticking in the lifters.

Thanks for the vid, you make it look easy. I have 2005 F250, that is starting to make noise. The local Ford dealer told me it needs Phasers and I should replace the lifters too. I didn’t know OHC’s had lifters.

Anyway, It looked like you were removing something from the valve train (to release pressure). I heard if you let the engine bleed down overnight, the cam probably won’t move (bleeding down sounds like the afore mentioned lifter), therefore you don’t have to mess with the valve train.

Thanks for the quick response. The Ford tech said it looked like the oil may not have been changed regularly (used truck). I changed the oil myself at 3000 mls. I was amazed how much oil came out with the filter (and it was pretty black/dirty). I’m thinking about changing the thermostat to 10 degrees cooler. I think these new engines run to hot so they can meet emisions (breaks down the oil, what do you think?). I’ll video the engine and post it. Thanks again

Yes, there are lifters, or called lash adjusters. In the video, a special tool is installed to compress the valve spring. This allows you to barely remove the rocker. This need to be done as per workshop manual, so the camshafts dont rotate when the VCT Phaser is removed. Another special tool, the yellow one, wedges between the timing chains to keep pressure against the tensioner. This is the only way it can be done without having to remove the front engine cover.

Just bought a used …
Just bought a used 04 f150 5.4l from chev dealer making a nocking sound from passenger side of engine Ford dealer said its came phaser noise they replaced the cat it was plugged and 2 spark plugs were broken just got truck back and it is still making the knocking noise from the pass side. Not sure how they can think the knock is normal im highly frustrated havn’t even got to drive my new truck in 3 weeks. Whats your opinion on this?
