Only 1 national UK music store chain remains on the high street now. Do you think it will also disappear?

Once Dickie Branson has palmed Virgin off, we are left with HMV, who had a pretty rough time of it in terms of sales this year. Do you think HMV will go, too?

(Background: According to today’s retail news, Richard Branson has sold his Virgin Megastores group in the UK and Ireland in a management buyout led. The value of the sale to Zawi Entertainment Group has not been revealed and it is unclear as to how much the chain is worth.

This leaves HMV as the only national chain left in the UK music sector, following the collapse of MVC, Tower Records, Music Zone and ChoicesUK in recent times. The “Megastores” chain will be re-branded “Zawi”, although the Virgin Media and Virgin Mobile brands are expected to maintain a presence in the stores once the takeover has been completed.)

Um, Wren? I’m really sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but point your browser at http://www.musiczone.co.uk/. Fopp has now gone bust. Unfortunately.

"It is with great regret that we announce the closure of Fopp. Our store chain is profitable, well regarded and loved by our loyal customers and staff. However we have failed to gain the necessary support from major stakeholders, suppliers and their credit insurers to generate sufficient working capital to run our expanding business.

We would like to thank staff and customers for their support over the past 25 years. Any outstanding website orders have now been cancelled and will not be fulfilled or charged."
Fopp went into administration at the beginning of July, closing 81 stores and making about 700 people redundant. However, HMV bought 6 of their stores and are keeping them open under the Fopp name. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6923511.stm

There is more than 1 UK music store left.

Virgin might be re-branded but it will still be here and still nationwide.

MVC might be going through troubles but again there still here (I know I was in my local branch in Brighton less than an hour ago!!)

Fopp has around 100 stores in the UK (so most definitely a "national" chain)

Britannia Music has around 40 stores nationwide.

CD Wow has around 30 stores and is growing.
