Can you receive unemployment if you voluntarily leave a company; you received a severance package.?

My employer is eliminating middle management jobs. They are offering voluntary buyouts, thirteen weeks plus one week for every year with the company. Can you be denied unemployment benefits if you accept the buyout and voluntarily leave?

No – you cannot double-dip at the expense of taxpayers. Unemployment is only for those who are laid off – not those who resign.

No. If you resign you can’t collect unemployment.

Generally you cannot collect unemployment if you voluntarily leave your job.

But there are certain cases when a company is downsizing, that you can still collect unemployment, even though you voluntarily accepted a buyout.

So the only way to find out, is to go apply.
