Is there any telltale way to find out just from look at the molecule structure?
For example, I know that C double bond C has both pi and sigma bonds, but how would I know that by just looking at that structure?
Yes!
Single bond: 1 σ bond
Double bond: 1 σ bond and 1 π bond
Triple bond: 1 σ bond and 2 π bonds
The information above is true for covalent bonds.

So very simple…look at the examples:
A molecule with a SINGLE bond has a sigma bond (σ) because the sigma bond is always the first to form. Example: H3C – CH3
A molecule with a DOUBLE bond has 1 sigma bond a 1 pi bond (π). Example: H2C=CH2
A molecule with a TRIPLE bond has 1 sigma bond and 2 pi bonds.
